Oslo (Ruter)

HyNor Oslo Buss will operate 5 fuel cell buses, from the Belgium bus manufacturer Van Hool, with hydrogen as fuel from March 2012 and a hydrogen station from Air Liquide. The operation will be based at Rosenholm bus garage, where the hydrogen station also will be established. Ruter is responsible for the operation, but the actual driving of the buses will be done by Unibus on line 81 A between Vestbanen (Oslo City) and Greverud (Akershus counties) including operation in the Oslo city centre. The operation will last for minimum 5 years. Ruter have an option for additional 5 buses and HyNor Oslo Buss is evaluating the opportunities for more buses.
HyNor Oslo Buss is a common project between Ruter (authority), the environmental organisation Zero, Oslo City and Akershus County. The two latter have contributed substantial to the financial of the project. In addition the project has got financial support from Transnova, Norwegian Research Council and Public-Private foundation (Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking - FCH JU) where EU is a central participant.

The project will reduce noise and make a better air quality in the Oslo area in addition to reduced global emission from public transport. The Hydrogen station will become environmental friendly since it will produce hydrogen from water and electricity at the station (electrolysis). To the production there will be used renewable electricity.

The Hydrogen Bus project is a part of a common European demonstration project (CHIC - Clean Hydrogen In European Cities) of fuel cell buses from 2010 to 2016. This project will also finance fuel cell buses in 4 other cities in Europe. In addition 4 other cities with other financial sources are included in the project.

The CHIC project will demonstrate new, non-commercial technology. Participation in the CHIC project demand huge collection of data from the operation and dissemination of the results. The project will also include general dissemination of the use of fuel cell and hydrogen thru out the whole project period. There will be established a visitor centre at the Rosenholm bus garage for this use.

Ruter is also participating in a Nordic hydrogen project (Next Move), financed from EU’s Interregional foundation for Øresund, Kattegat and Skagerrak, to establish a dissemination program outside The Oslo region, including dissemination to other Nordic countries.
